You’re going to do what? Start another business at the age of 72. Are you crazy? These are the comments I’m getting, and far from being put off, I’m actually relishing the idea.
Since selling King Materials Handling after 25 years, and after having a year off, whilst also transitioning the business to the new owners at the same time, I have been wondering where I would like to be at this time in my life.
Most people think I’m crazy. “Hang up your boots”, they say. I say, “I can’t sit on a beach, hell, I can’t sit still even. I have to do something”. So I began to look around for interesting products – as you do. The number of times I contacted an overseas supplier or manufacturer, only to be referred to the Australian representative, who prior to that time, I hadn’t come across in my searches, but now they are awake to a lead, makes me wonder how well some overseas companies are being represented.
I came across an interesting product called Propaflex. It is a three layer plastic product with a soft interior, a closed cell foam interior and a harder outer. During extrusion, the outer is ribbed for more strength. It was developed for use in protecting the contents of reels, such as fibre optics, cables, sheet steel, etc., from damage during transit. It can weather proof also, if fitted close to the reel sides. It can be heat sealed, banded or taped.
I hadn’t seen Propaflex before, so I approached the manufacturer in Italy. They were happy to help in any way possible. I received literature and sample materials, and I must say, I’m having a great time looking for prospective clients, which so far, includes machinery, spindle, pump, roller manufacturers and suppliers, where flexible but robust packaging is an absolute must, and where protection from the rigours of transport is essential. I am also looking at layering between products in crates and stillages, and lining of same. There will be many more uses out there, and I will find them.
Then I looked at the whole packaging market, and decided that unlike materials handling, where products are sold on a one off basis, packaging is obviously recurring income based. The more I look, the more I feel comfortable with the range of products I have now been able to gather together, in order to offer a one stop shop for packaging. I am almost ready to launch officially. I am just completing the web site.

In the meantime, let’s go on this journey together, and let’s see if I’ve learnt anything from my first 25 years in business. I am heading for a buy-out in 5 years time. I am planning backwards. Something I never did before. I will have everything in place, and in a fashion that will enable a person or business to take over a business that will run seamlessly and profitably from day one.

MIDAS GROUP UPDATE
It’s been a while since I wrote anything about Midas Group, so I thought it time for an update.
Midas Group was formed to enable me to separate investment opportunities from day to day business. It aims to invest in any form of return on capital, so the vehicle is not limited to any one genre.
If you have an idea that you want to run by us – do so. I won’t think it strange that it’s outside of conventional thinking.
You need a short term loan. You need a long term investor. You have a property development that needs capital. You need another ear to listen to your proposal. You need to import and need funds. We will consider anything that’s legal.
Currently, we are invested in real estate, looking at a new product launch, looking at investing in a new business, and considering caveat loans.

BOOK REVIEW. THE CLIFTON CHRONICLES
I didn’t know what I had, when I was reading the first book in the series by Jeffrey Archer. I had read a few of Jeffrey’s books before, but this one was special – very special, and rather than waiting until I finish the series, I am recommending that you do not wait another moment. You need to get in front of your computer and research this series.
I also recommend that you start at book one. There are seven in the series, with more to come, and by Archers own admission may not stop there, “as the words keep tumbling out, the more I write”.
It is the best written book of intrigue that I have ever read, and that’s saying something. My wife is reading the books that I have already read, and we are both enthralled by the characters and the amazing lives that they lead.
My wife says “what about, so and so”, and I say, “I can’t tell you anything, as it will spoil what happens in the next few books”. It is soooo frustrating, but I can assure you, that you will not be able to put these books down. I am reading myself to sleep every night, and sometimes in the early morning too, when I’m only partly awake, but dying to know what’s going to happen next.
I really don’t want to give you a preview, as the plot lines are so intricate, and I certainly don’t want to spoil your reading enjoyment. Suffice to say, that The Clifton Chronicles follow a family’s fortunes and mis-fortunes during some very interesting times in British history. You will laugh out loud. You will be captivated by the warmth and generosity of some characters, whilst others you just want dead.
I shout out loud in my head sometimes. “Can’t you see what that creep is really like? Can’t you see that he/she is taking you for a ride”? “Hey you, yes you in the pages, look at me. Read my lips. They are going to kill you if you don’t wise up”. They never listen to me, and sooner or later, I either end up disappointed with myself because I couldn’t help them, or they resolve the problem themselves. Meantime, I have to toss and turn until I open the pages again. It’s that type of series!
